We wander the lot set up in the snow on a vacant property, looking through their picked-over collection for something that might meet our needs. It is the last possible night, and by now all the inventory is well examined, handled, and getting to be in sad condition. The choice feels important, as we are asking the chosen to stand at attention for several weeks, but starting with a chain saw at their ankles.
Finally, with our selection in hand, we head for home.
But was our careful scrutiny worth it?
Would we have been just as happy with an impulsive choice?
Of course, without the ability to reply the next six weeks with different actions, it would be difficult to tell.
Our choice was pure bred. It will stand as an excellent guardian.
